Rat Terrier/Type A verses Teddy Terrier/Type B
Why was this created?
One of the goals among rat terrier fanciers is to separate the Teddy/Type B from the Rat Terrier/Type A dog. This can be very hard without the use of a ratio. This cart was created so people could quickly discover what their rat terrier's body to height ratio is and quickly look to see whether they have a rat or teddy.
Why were the numbers chosen?
I wanted to find the exact spot where the rat stopped and the teddy started. I am a numbers person so I started to calculate (I will apologies now, SORRY).
I took the accepted body length to height ratio of 10:9 for the rat terrier/TypeA and of 10:7 for the teddy/TypeB
I did some simple math. 10 Divided by 9 = 1.11 (or 111%) 10divided by 7 = 1.43 (or 143%)
There is a 32% difference between the rat and the Teddy, 1.43-1.11= .32 (or 32%)
Half of 32% is 16% so I made the assumption that it must be at this point that the two separated. (Hope you are following me) Now remember this is an assumption. Each Judge is going to look at a dog and make his/her own interpetation of SIGNIFIANT.
UKC Breed Standards State:
"Disqualification: A short-legged dog whose proportions vary significantly from the 10:9 ratio lacks breed type and must be disqualified."
I have interpreted this to mean 16%, half way between the rat and the teddy. This chart is based on that assumption and the fact that I personal want to stay within a 16% margin in my personal breeding program. I have also included 16% on the tall side as a guide in my breeding Rat Terriers.
This chart goes up to 18", some say the maximum height of the rat. However I have NEVER seen nor heard of a Teddy that tall.
I hope you find this helpful. Please feel free to write me in regards to this chart.
